Alzheimer’s disease
We are creating novel behavioral tests of
learning and memory in animals and humans
that may help in the early detection of
Alzheimer’s disease, a form of dementia
that includes severe memory impairments.
This has the potential to improve patient
diagnosis and treatment, and to aid in
development of new drugs.
Parkinson’s disease
Once viewed primarily as a motor disorder,
Parkinson’s disease also disrupts learning and
memory. These impairments may be partially
caused by medications used to treat the
motor symptoms. We are studying memory
impairments in Parkinson’s patients, both on
and off their medications, seeking insights
that will lead to new treatments of motor
symptoms that do not impair memory.
Other Disorders
Other research involves studies of memory
impairments in patients with schizophrenia,
Huntington’s disease, drug addiction,
and amnesia caused by stroke or oxygen
deprivation.
